Truly Huge: Can you give us some background about yourself?
Ray Burton: The quickie version. Here it goes. The first thing I can remember is training so I could win “field days” in grade three. It was only a red ribbon but I wanted it. I remember totally stressing over the high jump.
Then started sneaking into the weight rooms on base. My father was air force. Then the natural progression of track and football. I needed more power and size so I started actually learning what I should be doing in the gym instead of just guessing.
I joined the Canadian infantry in 1998 I think it was. Did well for myself and was asked to create a training program while I was on tour for the anti-Armour platoon. Things turned out great so I decided to get certified through the ISSA.
From there the rest is history. I moved to Alberta Canada and started my own personal training company in Calgary.
Truly Huge: What got you started in fitness??
Ray Burton: There wasn’t really a time when I didn’t participate. But actually making it a job started in the infantry like I said.
Truly Huge: What is it about fitness that you love so much??
Ray Burton: You know, I never really try to mess with things that are working. I don’t really want to waste time figuring out what it is I love about fitness. Instead I just do it and have fun.
Truly Huge: What adversities have you had to overcome??
Ray Burton: It’s pretty good to be me. I haven’t had to “overcome” any adversities. I have my genetic challenges like everyone else and life is life. It’s all how you look at it. I don’t want to give anything the advantage of a label like “adversity”.
Truly Huge: What are your favorite and least favorite exercises??
Ray Burton: Love doing dips and chins. Really dig working on the Olympic lifts because of the weight moved and the technical challenge involved.
Truly Huge: What are your tips for the beginner, intermediate and advanced?
Ray Burton: Beginner Trainer: There is no magic pill that is legal so concentrate on working hard.
Intermediate Trainer: You’re not “all that and a bag of potato chips”. Go ahead and add volume and watch your results shut down.
Advanced Trainer: Congratulations, you get to go back to square one. You know how to cause the damage now so you need to rest more.?
Truly Huge: Where do you stand on the use of steroids and supplements?
Ray Burton: People can do whatever they want with their lives. I personally got tired of needing to spend money to keep the look I achieved. Now I know that whatever I achieve will stay as long as I train hard and eat normal. When I get lazy with my meals or I’m traveling, I do use protein supplements. Eggs in a bucket really stinks on a three hour car drive.? ?
Truly Huge: What are your future goals?
Ray Burton: That’s a big one. Do you mean physical, financial, personal, or spiritual? I’ve got a list for each one. I guess the most simple answer would be “Every day and in every way I get better, better and better.” Right now though, I really need a house in calgary with a basement so I can train people privately that don’t feel comfortable in gyms or simply want to shower and get ready in private. The only problem is I do not have a down payment and I need to accomplish this in the next two months. If anyone knows how or has resources to learn how I can get my hands on a house that fits these parameters, I’m all ears.?
Truly Huge: What is the toughest part about fitness for you?
Ray Burton: Getting paid to motivate people that don’t want to do what they are doing when in fact, it’s a close personal friend of mine they don’t like. I love working out and feeling great and I just don’t get why people need someone to “force” them to take care of themselves. There are so many ways to stay in shape that we can find something ‘FUN’ to do honest.
I mean with just a little effort, you get a whole lot more “Bang” out of life.?
