Sugar Cravings

Could you please explain the enormous sugar cravings I get – and I mean uncontrollable, evil cravings – even when I am eating a diet high in protein and vegetables?! I sit here, at a size 6 and very fit, eating very guiltily an entire box of Lindt chocolates.

My usual meals include:

Breakfast: 2 boiled eggs, baked salmon, decaf coffee (black)
Snack: almonds, green apple, hard cheese
Lunch: steak, caesar salad, perier
Snack: olives, ham pieces, celery
Diner: lamb, broccoli (with shreaded cheese)
Snack: sugar free low carb yogurt (after work out)

I try to be immaculate about my diet – no sugar, no flour, no rice, no pasta, no potatoes, limited dairy… but by about 1:30 I’m dying for chocolate, treats.. anything! And then, if I can’t resist, I binge! I just go nuts – candy, licorice, chocolate etc…. What do I do?!
I desperately don’t want to gain the weight I’ve lost. Please help. Suggestions, books to read, change in diet… I don’t want to desire eating crap like this.

Answer From Ray:
The first thing I would do is add a cheat day into my eating schedule and make sure you are eating enough of those above foods to make your daily requirement. Only one day a week, go out and have a nice treat that you like. Don’t feel guilty about it, enjoy it. It will let your body know that you are not trying to starve it and your mind and soul will love you for it. If anything, you may find yourself more full of energy and learner the very next day. Competitive bodybuilders, myself included have know this for years and experience it after every competition diet.

Now after that is done, work on your self control. Binging is being weak. If it is not a simple lack of self-control on your part, then there is a serious emotional need that is not getting met in your life and you should figure out what that is and deal with it. Until you figure out why you need the emotional fix of binging you will continue to try and fill the gap with the emotional chemicals released by binging.
