Randy Couture Gym Las Vegas

I finished up the article on Wanderlei Gym Las Vegas but didn’t mention the visit to Randy Couture Gym or “Xtreme Couture” yet so here we go.

randy couture gym las vegasI had visited the Xtreme Couture gym in Florida a few years back before I had even got into training MMA so I was looking forward to seeing the inside of this one. I had tried to get into the gym the last time I was in Las Vegas as well but they were closing down for the night. The first night we arrived in Las Vegas we grabbed a bite to eat at the hotel (I’ll post a review link of that in a bit). Then we got our stuff together and headed to the Randy Couture Gym. We totally got pooched on this cab ride by an old “gentleman”. He did no more than 35 the whole way. Before you ask, the meter runs on time AND distance. Grrr.

We tried to speed him up and complain but amazingly his hearing and English were not that great at the end of the ride. The funny part was when we first got in, it was relaxing until some guys “raced” by yelling “do the speed limit and quite screwing your fair!”. Half hour later into a fifteen minute cab ride, I knew what they meant.

At any rate we got there safe and sound as if there was any other safer speed other than walking. So before we get too far into this, why no video of the Randy Couture Gym? Well, because I was freaked out! Seriously, this was a really big deal for me and I had no idea what to expect. I had intentions of filming tons of stuff but got shell shocked….

When I walked in the door, there was Forrest Griffin training. Yup, Forrest was finishing up on the same mat I was about to go train on. Seriously, I don’t know if I’m weird or anything but I thought that was incredibly cool.

So what did we do for training at Randy Couture’s Gym? First was an MMA class and then a Muay Thai class. Here is a description of the MMA class first.

Warm up was doing laps of the gym running. Then the conditioning was weaving in and out of the heavy hanging bags with lead leg forward, touch the wall, sprint down, sprint back, bear crawl down, bear crawl back, continuos forward rolls the length of the mat. Done a bunch of times like a race trying to pass the guy in front of you. That workout was a lot more fun than it sounds.

Than it was partner pummelling. Then onto pummelling with partner takedowns. After that we went to position change drill on the ground on the dummy. Kneeling chest mount to side control to north south and around. The other drill was from standing to passing legs to the side and then position changes. With those drills we mixed in step ups using the dummy as the step.

After that we move onto partner drills working on control from the single knee mount. We also did the “can opener” up against the cage. Derek got popped pretty good but that kind of stuff happens. Not like he’s not used to that sort of stuff.

After that was all said and done we moved onto the Muay Thai class. We worked on low kick techniques which was great. The coolest drill here was a medicine ball drill. Your partner holds the medicine ball on either shoulder or hip, changing position with each hit. The other guy whacks away with either elbows or knees trying to knock the medicine ball down. It was a fun workout for both guys.

After that is was a meal at the Peppermill restaurant. I didn’t get too far into the meal before the nappy bear hit me :-) Awesome, awesome day.
