Handstand Shoulder Workout Routine

Posted by Ray Burton | .

Larry and I have been really changing up our workout routines lately. After a while you get kind of tired of not being able to scratch your own shoulder and so we thought we would get a little more…well rounded I guess you could put it.

We have been doing a lot of handstand work in out workout routines instead of standard shoulder presses or lateral raises. The results have been real cool. Not only does this kind of training enable you to do really neat party tricks, its also causes your shoulders to explode.

The first question obviously is how do you start to use handstands in your workout without smashing your face up. The first clip you see here is Larry backing up into the wall. Whats really happening is Larry is taking a pushup and moving it higher and higher as he gets comfortable. Eventually he is almost vertical but still feels relatively safe. Once you do these in your workout routine for a while your ready to move on to the next version. Almost forgot, when trying to get stronger, 5 sets of 5 reps is almost always a safe outline for workload. When you make a jump in resistance, and they are usually quite big when you are using bodyweight, then sets of 2’s, 3’s or whatever until you get to 5’s work well too. Just give yourself enough rest between sets and keep an eye on your wrists.

High Incline Wall Pushup:

Next, after walking up the wall for a while, you can kick over to the wall. At first you may just want to hold it. Then you may want to just work bending your arms into your workouts. Soon you will be doing the full reps to the floor. Then, you put your hands on blocks for more of a range of motion. Those clips will be coming soon.

I will put up the clip of me doing freestanding handstand pushups when I can freaking stop from tipping over! Feel free to send in your clips as well. If you are popping out anything cool, I’ll put it up on the site. Just send the clip to me titled “cool clip” at buildingbodies@hotmail.com.
