I get a lot of weight loss diet questions like the one you’re going to read below. I could outright tell someone what to eat on their diet but it doesn’t help them in the long run. They need to know the ‘why’ of what they are eating and what effects different foods have on their bodies. They need to LEARN that they don’t need to diet, they need to eat properly. NORMALLY. Semantics maybe, but diet sounds like you need to do crazy crap in order to look great and you DON’T. Really.
Crazy is a relative thing anyway. Not like your crazy aunt Helga sort of relative but relative in the sense that if you make something a habit, it only seems crazy to those that don’t adopt the same habits and patterns on a daily basis like you do.
You need to eat like you’ve just got dropped into the woods and the only thing you can eat are things that grow and move. Generally, the less legs the better. Now those are easy to understand parameters even for me. ‘Woods Eating‘ isn’t crazy. It’s where you came from and what your body is designed to run on. It just so happens that in this day and age, you’re lucky enough to be able to cook them as well as put some spices and ketchup on there if you’d like. Before anyone says ketchup is bad, I need you to take that chocolate bar out of your mouth cause I can’t understand you. BLAM!!!!!
Things like ketchup are the 20 in the 80/20. Tweaking ketchup out of your diet might produce a small percentage of weight loss but there are bigger fish to fry that will give you way more bang for your depravation (just kidding) buck. You want to bag the whale Moby Dick, before you start jigging for smelt when it comes to diet stuff.
You think I’m nuts and that’s o.k. I think it’s nuts that the world eats food with the nutritional equivalent of cardboard and the toxicity of wood alcohol on a daily basis. I also think it’s nuts that people then pay hard earned money for drugs to mask the pain from diseases that can often be prevented by giving your body AN OUNCE of the time and care you give pampering your car.
The crazy thing about weight loss diets in todays society is that we shouldn’t need them and actually we don’t need them. We don’t need weight loss diets..we need proper instruction on eating the stuff that is supposed to go into our bodies and not the prepackaged, processed, disease causing crap that companies are pumping out like CRACK to parents that then feed it to their kids because…THEY ARE TOO BUSY TO COOK. That was a run on sentence and I don’t care. lol
People want to go on weight loss diets to get back in shape. I can understand that but if you are in the habit of skipping meals or using vending machines for lunch, you don’t need a diet! You need the basics of healthy eating.
HERE IS THE DEAL: There are consequences to your actions.
Like it or lump it, what you eat, your ‘diet‘ is what gets mulched into the skin you walk around in on a daily basis. You have to show self control. Your body is an outward reflection of how you train it, how you feed it and how you care for it. You LOOK how you FEEL about yourself. Because how you feel about yourself is how you will care for yourself.
I totally understand that some people are on drugs for this and that and a side effect is weight gain. I also understand that there are circumstances that are devastating and they can throw you off track. I’m not trying to pull a Tom Cruise here. (I should have use the drug interview but this was a riot. You’ve been warned!)
How many times have I been on the phone with a client, they are in a hurry, so they giggle about the fact that they are having a slice of pizza because they have to jet out the door. Well freak’n fine, I understand moms are busy and executives need to make meetings, but you could be drinking water with that pizza and not pop. Why pop? Think about it. Maybe you like it, maybe you’ve been conditioned to like it by the media. Does 24 teaspoons of sugar sound normal to you (500ml bottle)? 24 spoons of sugar in a can of pop. Sit down and pile that in you mouth and see if your body reacts. That’s some crazy tweaking to make that taste good enough to drink.
Our bodies are made in the small daily choices. It’s things like not having pop with the pizza. It’s things like one slice instead of two. And what do you call that? WILL POWER. If you don’t have will power to say no to the things that are keeping you from the body you want then you don’t want that body more than you want pizza. So go enjoy the pizza. It’s not wrong at all, it’s just the choice you made and if you are happy with the consequences of eating it then I say ‘God bless ya‘ for knowing what you truly want.
So you can’t ever have pizza? HELL NO!! That’s not what I am saying. What I am saying is that bodies are created when you say ‘no’ to bad things more frequently than ‘yes’. And when you say ‘yes’ to empowering things more than you say ‘enggg, whatever’. lol
Right Then. That was just supposed to be an into into a question and answer segment on ‘A diet plan to lose weight’. So maybe I should just get on with it. Here is the question.

Answer From Ray Burton:
Hey Dominic,
You need to learn more about how to feed your body right with proper nutrition (like protein). I wrote an article already just for that purpose right here:
Nutrition and fitness basics. I think you should also learn a little more about exercise as far as cardio and weight training goes and the combined effect on your weight loss. Read my 22 secrets of weight loss article.
That was easy enough! Seriously, I’ve got a ton of diet, nutrition and weight loss stuff buried in here from years of writing that if you throw a weight loss or diet question into the comments below, I should have an quick answer for you.

Thanks for keeping it short, sweet and interesting. I don’t usually feel like I need a lot of advice, but your articles keep me interested, I often learn something and they keep me motivated. So thanks for shaking it up. But lose the lol…
Glad to hear it Karyn. Why can’t I lol though?
It’s Healthbolt Carnival Time……
Welcome to the latest Healthbolt Carnival. It’s a mixed bag of tricks from diet and green sex toys to politics and how to avoid hangovers. So grab a coffee, settle back, and have a look around. Hopefully, there is something here for everyone…
Hi Ray,
Thanks for all the interesting articles. You mentioned Chocolate in this present article. I am sticking to my nutritional plan with as much fresh fruit and veggies as possible together with resistance training and cardio/walking my dog about 10kms each day.
I have reduced my body fat quite considerably now, I lost quite a few pounds in weight in the beginning but now with resistance training, my weight is going up again.
But here is my question : Chocolate. I have read many articles about finding chocolate that is at least 80% cacao and which is healthy for one. I have found a brand which is 100% cacao which I melt down in the microwave and then add a few teaspoons of Stevia to sweeten in it. I also add 2 tablespoons of extra virgen Olive oil. This makes is much smoother. This chocolate is supposed to have large quantities of antioxidents and essential oils. I enjoy a few pieces each day, and take it because of its health properties which should help my body and skin stay younger as I am over 60 years old now.
What are your comments on this please?
Many thanks,
Brian
I’d be all for it as a treat if it was melted on the stove. I don’t own a microwave and won’t eat food if it comes out of one.
I actually really want to taste this!! I’m going to give it a shot and I think I just might have to send your little treat out in the newsletter (giving you credit of course).
You’re a pretty smart cookie there Brian.
Hi Ray,
I want to thank you so much for all your newsletters, they keep me inspired and I get a kick out of them as well. I am on a mission to lose weight, build lean muscle and change my life around for good. Being in my 30’s now (which I was devastated to leave my 20’s) I can’t stay skinny eating a half a pizza while watching “Casa Blanca” anymore. So, it’s been a month and still going strong. I seem to be losing fat very fast but gaining muscle so I try to ignore the scale and just use my pants as a measuring tool (the scale depresses and confuses me). I look forward to your emails and I thank you for taking the time to care about us out here in this tempting world of addictive and deadly processed and fattening fast foods. Your an angel in disguise cause you take the time to teach us and by this you save lives ~ Thank you =) Izzy~
P.S. I think your ‘LOL’s” are great - lets us know your laughing so we can laugh with you, instead of at you =P
Izzy, you just made my day in a very profound way. I’m stoked to hear about the changes in your life as you get better every day in every way.
Thank you so very very much Ray =D
Somehow I don’t find the word “moderatiion”, or the way “we used to eat”, though there are still a few people who do that, or those have gone retro. There are times when politness requires you to take what your loved ones offer, or friends at a social gathering. If you have a choice, usually you know what to choose without slighting your host, or . . . mother-in-law, if she is the hostess. If not, “take one”, eat it, and say “thank you very much, it was tasty”. Okay, your father-in-law gets into the act and offers you the last piece, a small one on the platter, dare you refuse?! Obviously not, and even then you find of begging off more than you can chew, but politely.
I have a feeeling that unless you follow specific dietary rules, there is no such thing as a “fobidden food”. Then too, for instance, once you cooked fries fresh cut the potatoes, watched them cook, and instead of ketchup, you used salt and vinegar. It’s all matter of healthy, and very often tasty choices.
Ray
I just want to say thank you so much for your great and sincere motivation. Lately, I have gained a very fulfilled enjoyment in reading and how to better and change my life and your articles definitely go along with my ideals, in fitness and in life. I find it very satisfying that I can relate what you have to say to the other tools(Tony Robbins, Charlie Hayes) I am using to take charge of my life. Being 19, I am very grateful for finding such material at a young age and being open-minded to absorb and use it consistently.
As for the fitness I have already lost 10lbs (180)in less than 4 weeks and am on my way to 15 more (165). Unfortunately I have chose a profession that favors smaller people..lol Being a 6′3″ racecar driver is a challenge but I’m willing to take that on. As you say, if you workout correctly you will see results in a week or two and I am already seeing and appreciating the effects..breaking the workout myths!!
Thank you so much again
Devin
My pleasure Devin. Nice to hear a sharp mind making a plan for his future.
