Arthritis and Knee Pain

Good Moring Ray,

How are you?

I have a question regarding Arthritis.I haven’t dealt with a client who had arthritis in the knees before I wanted to get some input from you. What would be some of the best exercises you would presribe, other than aqua exercise. The pain in the knees only come once in awhile. Been active in the gym years ago, use to be a runner, before the pain in the knees, now finds it hard walking up over the stairs without feeling out of breath, however, walks 3 times a day, has doctor clearance to exercise, don’t take medication, wants to work on endurance, and wants to lose 10 pounds. Do you have any advice you can offer me? Thank you so much for your help, its very much appreciated..

Thank you for your time,

Kind regards,
Roxanna

Reply From Ray:
Sorry for the long time in my reply, I am on vacation. As for exercises that are friendly to the knees…I have had good luck with several lunge style variations. Always using the heel as the pushing point and mainting at least a 90 degree angle in the knee joint, sometimes you have to open it up even wider.

I like to use the smith machine as a handle to hold onto for clients that are unstable or need to really get some blood into the knee joint before they can apply full tension. I have also found that a lot of knee pain is a result of tight hamstrings and hip flexors, so if yoga is a possiblity, please do that. If not stretching will be very important.

Hope that helps a little!
